X12 EDI 997
What is an EDI 997 Functional Acknowledgment?
The EDI 997 Functional Acknowledgment, or FA, is essentially an electronic receipt sent in response to other EDI transactions.
How is EDI 997 Used?
The EDI 997 transaction set is used in broader EDI communications between trading partners to help ensure non-repudiation. It's a critical component of EDI transactions because EDI transactions deal with vital business exchanges between trading partners, and in order to do business, each partner requires legal proof that their messages are received by their partners.
Note, when you receive an EDI 997 in response to a transaction you previously sent to an EDI partner, you only know that your document arrived and was processed by the recipient's EDI translator. It does not provide any indication that the ng partntradier agrees with the contents of the prior transaction, or that the transaction met all of their business requirements. For example, a 997 Functional Acknowledgement sent in response to an EDI 860 Purchase Order Change would not indicate that a vendor has agreed to make requested changes to a previous PO.
